Flood Protection

The Floodshield Flood Protection Barrier ‘Inspired by compassion’.

BACK in the winter of 2001, the news reported of the widespread devastation, in the wake of the extensive flooding throughout the U.K. Friends Robert and Peter were shocked at the misery the floods were causing, particularly as reports make it only to clear that the sandbags being used to protect homes could not cope against the incoming floodwater.

Robert and Peter agreed that there was a desperate need for a simple, inexpensive and effective alternative to sandbags. The pair set about the task of solving the problem and a simple prototype of a Flood Protection door barrier was made. A test - house was built with a flood chamber in front of the house to test the prototypes. The simple innovative design prevented water from entering the test house.

Spurred on by the results, Robert and Peter applied for patents in the U.K, USA and Europe. Then began the long task of designing and developing a manufacturing process to produce a door barrier for emergency use by local authorities and house holders. The Floodshield Flood Protection Door Barrier could be  produced at a low cost and in 6 standard sizes, it had to be simple and quick to use instead of the hassle of sandbags. Sandbags have to be filled, transported and laid in a brick formation across the front of the doorway. At least half a tonne of sandbags are required just to try and protect one doorway from about 6 inches of floodwater. Then when the floodwater has gone they need to be disposed of because of contamination from sewerage.
