THE Insurance Industry is getting tough on the problem of flooding. They say they are no longer footing the bill for flood damage. Insurance experts are warning that homeowners must take steps to prevent their homes from flooding or face large rises in premiums and excesses. In some cases where properties are at significant risk of flooding or if they have previously been flooded Insurances are refusing to provide flood cover. This is catastrophic for home owners as this could result in homes decreasing in value to the sum of tens of thousands of pounds. Homes without flood cover would become un-mortgage able therefore un saleable.

The Insurance Industry say that the situation is simple, homes in high crime risk areas have burglar alarms to keep premiums down, so homes in flood risk areas need to have in place flood prevention products like flood barriers in order to receive and maintain flood insurance cover at a reasonable price. Banks are already refusing to provide insurance cover to homes that have been flooded or that are a significant risk of flooding’. Homeowners must have flood prevention measures in place before they find themselves in this situation. By 2013 this situation will be wide spread as an agreement between the government and the Insurance Industry comes to an end. It is estimated that over half a million people will be left without flood insurance cover. Premiums are going to rise and insurance companies are going to impose large excess on the flood cover they do provide. In some cases up to £25,000.

A couple whose home was devastated by floods have been told by their insurer that they must pay the first £25,000 of any future flooding claim.
They are not alone. Other home owners in flood risk areas are being cast adrift by insurers. The insurers who are providing flood cover at a reasonable price are demanding formal written proof of purchase from home owners who live in flood risk areas that they have Flood Prevention measures and products in place in preparation for future floods.
